I did some major Spring cleaning over the weekend and noticed that I had tons of boxes filled with clothes that I have not worn in ages. I attempted to try on some of the jeans, tops and dresses that I dug out, but that was a huge mistake.

How To Calculate Your BMI

So what does BMI actually mean?

BMI, or the body mass index, is a tool thats used to determine whether or not a person is at a normal weight for his or her height.  It was invented between 1830 and 1850 by mathematician and scientist Adolphe Quetelet.  Though its been almost 200 years since he created the BMI, its used today almost exactly as he outlined.

While BMI isnt the final word in whether or not someone is at a normal weight, its one of the first tools often used to determine if someones overweight.  Because the BMI doesnt distinguish between weight from fat and weight from muscle (other tools must be used to determine the actual amount of fat) it doesnt work well for very muscular people like athletes.

It also does not take in the affect of different size body frames.

But for most of us, BMI is a pretty accurate measure of whether were underweight, a normal weight, overweight or obese.

I try to go vegetarian at least once a week both for my wallet and my waistline. However, with these cold temperatures it’s hard to resist the urge to dive head first into a bowl of turkey chili or chicken soup. That’s why for this week’s Recipe Makeover I decided to take one of my favorite meat-based recipes and make it fit for a vegetarian!
