Government to outline consumer rights on health care

The Obama administration says most Americans will soon have the right to appeal to a third party referee when their health insurer denies a claim for a medical service.

The rules released Wednesday carry out provisions of President Barack Obama’s health care law. Insurers generally give customers a couple of chances to appeal internally, but access to outside review varies.

Consumer groups say it’s a move in the right direction, just not far enough. For example, advocates wanted 24-hour turnaround in cases involving urgent care, and the rules allow up to 72 hours.

The rules take effect in January, except for “grandfathered” plans.

Climate Skeptic Inhofe Claiming Environment Made Him Ill

In a case that can only be appropriately described as ironic, Senator Jim Inhofe–the former Chairman of the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works and a vocal critic of global warming theory–is blaming the environment for his recent illness.

Specifically, Inhofe, a 76-year-old Republican representing the state of Oklahoma, has told reporters that he believes that he suffered what Tulsa World Washington Bureau Reporter Jim Myers refers to as “a severe upper respiratory illness” after swimming in Grand Lake in the final week of June.

“There is no question,” Inhofe told Myers on Friday, adding that Monday evening, immediately following his swim, he became “deathly sick.” He links the illness to a strange type of algae discovered in the lake where he has lived for more than a dozen years along with his wife Kay.

He told Myers that he had never seen that specific type of Eukaryotes before, but that he “didn’t think anything about it” at the time.

Old osteoporosis drug may help in killing flu viruses

A old osteoporosis drug may be effective in killing a range of influenza viruses, including ones that are very dangerous to people like the H5N1 bird flu virus, scientists in Hong Kong reported on Wednesday.

Unlike antiviral drugs that target and mute flu viruses, the drug pamidronate boosts a certain class of human immune cells and sets them off on a killing spree to exterminate host cells that are infected with flu viruses.

The experts, who published their findings in the Journal of Experimental Medicine, described the immune cells — called gamma-delta T-cells — as being able to recognize host cells that are infected with flu viruses.
