Blood drive set Monday in memory of baby with rare heart condition

Emma Routh died at 3 months from hypoplastic left heart syndrome. She received blood transfusions during an open heart surgery. She would have been 3 on April 15. The blood drive will be from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the party room at Bounce-U, 8922 S. Memorial Drive. Children of donors will be allowed free play time at the facility, and adult donors will receive a 10 percent discount on any party booked there within a year. Donors may also choose to forego their appreciation gift, allowing the blood institute to give the gift’s monetary value to The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. UCSF team on trail of prion treatment

Bay Area researchers may be on the trail of compounds that can fight a fatal disease. Their discovery is the result of a high-speed collaboration between three different labs.

At UCSF’s Small Molecule Discovery Center, researchers are always hoping to hit it big. In this case, the challenge is a rare and mysterious class of diseases, caused by misshapen proteins called prions.

“There’s a not treatment for prion diseases currently and I think the reason is that it’s the most recent of the diseases that’s been discovered in the last couple of decades, so it’s really uncharted territory,” said Adam Renslo, Ph.D. from UCSF.

Tulsa tough for allergy sufferers

Tulsa came in as the 26th “most challenging place to live with spring allergies,” worse than last year’s rank of 33rd. Oklahoma City was ranked 22nd this year. Several factors have made this season particularly tough for allergy sufferers in the Tulsa area, said Dr. Christopher Gifford, an allergist at the Warren Clinic. “It has been a highly symptomatic allergy season as far as history is concerned,” he said. According to the foundation, Tulsa has a worse-than-average pollen count but is average in the amount of people taking allergy medicine and the number of allergists per capita.
