STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – ALL SHORES – There’s no reason to sit home and wonder what the city can offer you in terms of fitness. Get up and find out.

The first Monday of every month (second Monday in July and September), city recreation centers are open to everyone free of charge. You can sample a range of fitness programs and activities – everything from stepping, jogging and lifting, to volleyball and more. All you need is a photo ID and a towel.

Some classes are available for a small fee.

Recreation center hours vary by location, so call before you head out to get specific hours and program information.

Here is a list of facilities on Staten Island, by Shore:

NORTH SHORE  
 

* Faber Park Field House, Faber Street and Richmond Terrace, Port Richmond. Open Monday through Friday, 11 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. and Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Facilities include a teen room and a computer resource center. An outdoor pool is open during the summer. The facility is accessible to those with disabilities. The supervisor is Lou Scara. Call 718-816-5558. City bus service is nearby.

* Lyons Pool Recreation Center is on Murray Hulbert Ave. in Tompkinsville. The pool is closed until summer, but the center does offer a fitness room, locker room and lobby. It is open Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 9:30 p.m.; Saturday and Sunday, 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. The center is accessible to those with disabilities. The supervisor is Bill LaCurtis. Call 718-816-6302. This center’s companion facility, Cromwell Recreation Center, is currently closed. City bus and train service run nearby.

* Graniteville Field House at Jules and Regis Drive covers 1.6 acres. It features an outdoor basketball court, a play area known as Jennifer’s Playground, and a lobby. School groups may visit by appointment. The center is open Monday through Thursday, 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Call 718-477-5471. City bus service is nearby.

EAST SHORE 
 

* The De Matti Playground Fieldhouse also includes an afterschool room. The building is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday. The DeMatti Playground is at the intersection of Tompkins Avenue, Chestnut Street and Shaughnessy Lane in Rosebank. The manager is Bill LaCurtis. Call 718-816-5256.

WEST SHORE  
 

* The Greenbelt Recreation Center at 501 Brielle Ave. (across from Sea View Hospital Rehabilitation Center and Home) in Sea View is open Monday through Friday, 6:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

It offers numerous recreation opportunities: There is a game room, fitness room, cardio room, and an arts and crafts center; you’ll find three ping-pong tables, a croquet lawn, a nature trail, a library and a computer resource center. There are two outdoor tennis courts, an outdoor soccer field, an outdoor basketball court and a playground. Also on site are a kitchen, a multipurpose room, two locker rooms and a lobby.

The center is managed by Christopher Caropolo; the deputy manager is Divina McNatt. Call 718-667-3545. The center is accessible to those with disabilities; city bus service runs nearby.

Boston Scientific Introduces First 16-Contact Percutaneous SCS Lead

Boston Scientific has announced FDA approval of its new Infinion 16 Percutaneous Lead for use with the company’s Precision Plus Spinal Cord Stimulator system.

The Precision Plus system is used to treat chronic pain by electrically stimulating the spinal cord, and Boston Scientific claims that by providing greater coverage of the spinal cord, the Infinion 16 lead will be able to better alleviate chronic pain.

NIAID News Release: Statement: NIH Discontinues Tenofovir Vaginal Gel in ‘VOICE’ HIV Prevention Study

A large-scale clinical trial evaluating whether daily use of an antiretroviral-containing oral tablet or vaginal gel can prevent HIV infection in women is being modified because an interim review found that the gel, an investigational microbicide, was not effective among study participants.

On Nov. 17, an independent data and safety monitoring board (DSMB) recommended that the Vaginal and Oral Interventions to Control the Epidemic (VOICE) study evaluating daily use 1 percent tenofovir vaginal gel be discontinued because there was no difference in effect demonstrated between the drug-containing gel and a placebo gel.
